Kuyichi X Jean School

Kuyichi X Jean School Salvage Challenge

At KUYICHI, we aim to share our knowledge and raise awareness for sustainability and recycling, one fair pair of jeans at the time. That’s why we challenged Jean Schoolstudents to create a collection of cool denim garments from leftover fabrics. They gladly accepted! Read on to discover the students’ first ideas for salvaged denim goods.

THE CHALLENGE

Early September, twenty denim-crazy students signed up for the salvage challenge. Over the course of ten weeks they will create a full denim line, made entirely from surplus Italian organic fabric, leftover samples and unused leather and trims. The students enjoy complete creative freedom to give these second hand, but perfectly good materials a new life.

THE FIRST IDEAS

On Friday September 25th KUYICHI was invited to the Jean School to see the students’ initial ideas. They showed moodboards and samples, explaining their design direction. And boy, were we impressed. The students proved to be savvy in combining heritage and contemporary fashion with designs for denim bombers and baseball inspired jackets. They applied traditional and labour intensive Japanese repair techniques to create refined fabrics. With denim kimono’s they paid hommage to Japan’s ancient denim history. Our favourite concept of the day was a dungaree design with a skilfully plaited back piece.

THE LAUNCH

The students’ final creations will be presented and auctioned during the Kingpins show on 29 and 30 October at Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam. All profits go to the Jean School and will be used for denim factory visits, in order for students to get a first-hand experience in producing sustainable denim.

THE JEAN SCHOOL

The Jean School launched in 2012 as a sustainable answer to the denim industry’s ever increasing need for professionals with a blue heart. A cooperation between conscious denim platform House of Denim and education centre ROC Amsterdam, the Jean School emphasises craftsmanship and sustainability. Students are familiarised with the entire plant-to-pant process—starting at inspiration, through sustainable sourcing and production, to logistics, sales and retail.

If you’d like to attend the KUYICHI X Jean School salvage challenge exhibition and auction, please let us know and we will put you on the Kingpins guest list.
