We use TENCEL™ from Lenzing over conventional lyocell for a reason. With TENCEL™ we're guaranteed that the wood that is used to make the lyocell comes from sustainably managed forests. The wood is FSC or PEFC certified, both accredited standards for this. So no illegal logging involved! Most of their wood is sourced in Europe!
Besides, Tencel is also certified with the EU Ecolabel, proving that it has a low environmental impact by this standard.
The lyocell process turns wood pulp into a filament fibre. For this you need to transform the cellulose with the help of solvents. One of the biggest differences between a normal viscose and TENCEL™ lyocell is that it uses a closed-loop production process. Meaning that over 99% of the resources are captured and recycled from the process. Making it possible to use the chemicals over and over again instead of needing to constantly renew and dispose them.
All TENCEL™ is made from cellulose. Cellulose comes from plant cell walls and is what gives strength to plants and wood. After it is turned into the yarn, it still is cellulose, so completely natural. Feeling cool on your skin for the hotter days.
Tencel is even certified to be biodegradable and compostable under industrial, home, soil and marine conditions. You could just put it in the ground and it will completely dissolve and go back to nature!
