Tencelâ„¢ Lyocell: the biodegradable fibre you need to discover
What is Tencelâ„¢ lyocell?
Lyocell are cellulosic fibres which derive from wood, just like the better-known rayon or viscose. TENCELâ„¢ Lyocell is the award-winning brother of lyocell, made by Lenzing. This Austrian company makes certified cellulose fibres in a closed-loop production process and derives the wood from controlled forests. TENCELâ„¢ Lyocell fibres are smooth to the touch and breathable. TENCELâ„¢ fibres also have quick-drying properties, making it the perfect option for a sweaty, warm day!
Why do we use fabrics with Tencelâ„¢ lyocell?
TENCEL™ fibres have a low impact with a low water footprint. Trees use much less water than cotton plants. A lower impact means purer goods! We’re guaranteed that the wood used for TENCEL™ fibres are derived from forests certified by accredited forest management standards. These standards prove that the forest has been managed to preserve biodiversity and that no illegal logging is involved!
The use of a closed-loop production process is the biggest difference between regular viscose and TENCELâ„¢ lyocell. A closed-loop production process means that the process water and the solvent used are recycled up to 99% to ensure the impact is as low as possible. The closed-loop process makes it possible to keep reusing the solvent instead of needing to renew and dispose of it constantly. Better for our planet!
TENCELâ„¢ lyocell fibres are wood-based fibres, so they are of botanical origin. Lenzing also certified them as biodegradable under industrial, home, soil and marine conditions. TENCELâ„¢ lyocell fibres are, therefore, able to return to our precious earth fully. You could just put the fibres in the ground and they will completely dissolve!
How to take care of products with Tencelâ„¢ Lyocell
Want to know how to care for TENCEL™ Lyocell clothing the right way? Good news – it’s easier than you think. TENCEL™ Lyocell is a sustainable fabric made for comfort, but it does require a bit of gentle treatment to keep it looking its best.
Always wash your TENCELâ„¢ Lyocell garments on a delicate cycle. This setting uses a lower spin speed that helps preserve the fibres and reduce wear over time.
To avoid wash streaks, we recommend using liquid detergent, laundry sheets or pods. Please do not use powder detergent, as it can leave visible marks on the fabric.
Still seeing white lines on your TENCEL™ item? Wash it again without any detergent – that usually helps remove the streaks.
Don’t worry if your item feels a little stiff after washing. That’s completely normal for TENCEL™ Lyocell. Once it’s dry, the fabric softens again – especially after wearing or giving it a light iron.
By following these eco-friendly washing tips, you’ll extend the life of your TENCEL™ Lyocell garments while keeping their soft feel and elegant drape.
