Circular denim: from waste to wear

Waste during jeans production

The journey begins at the heart of denim production. Before jeans are sewn together, the patterns need to be cut out from the fabric. All patterns are laid out digitally to use the fabric as efficiently as possible, but cutting waste is always produced. We call this pre-consumer cotton waste. However, we don’t want it to go to waste.

Reusing our cutting waste for new denim

SARP Jeans, one of our jeans suppliers, now collects the cutting waste from Kuyichi production for reuse. Instead of letting these leftover fabric scraps go to waste, Bossa Denim, one of our denim mills, now gives them a new life! They do this by breaking down the fibres in their new recycling facility to turn them into new fibres.

These fibres will become new yarn and will be woven into a stunning denim fabric. We’ve used pre-consumer cotton fibres in our denims many times before, but we’re immensely proud to close our own pre-consumer waste loop now.

From denim waste to wear

We use this denim fabric for two new women’s jeans styles: the Lena Loose Rosebowl Blue and Rosa Straight Soul Blue. These jeans are made of 30% recycled cotton from our own cutting waste and 70% organic cotton. The recycled cotton adds extra texture to the denim fabric. Naps may appear in the fabric—a beautiful testament to the journey from waste to wear.
